"I wish we still did vocab in English class." I wrote this at the bottom of my Arthur Miller article yesterday and I do feel very strongly about this. I'm a big fan of words and I love learning new ones. Knowing words makes a person sound more intelligent and capable, and makes them more intelligent and capable, and in the case of high school students, makes them better at standardized tests, essays, and applications. I didn't do as well on the vocabulary sections of the SAT and ACT, and I believe it is because we only did vocabulary Sophomore year. I don't really understand why we don't continue learning that aspect of English; it would help us with all of the reading and writing that the class focuses on instead.
The reason I bring this up and why I wrote it at the bottom of my Miller article is because I didn't understand some parts of the article; I didn't recognize the words he used. This has happened with other articles as well, in addition to many of the poems that we explicate. I feel like I'm missing out because I don't get to know these wonderful words. I guess the moral of this story is that I should start doing vocabulary again, on my own. Dictionary.com has a word of the day, perhaps I'll go on that site everyday and teach that word to myself.
