This week, there was one aspect of this class that was made clear to me by the poem of the week. Schoenborn has said many times before that one must look at a piece of art multiple times in order to truly understand it, because one will see something different each time. I understood this and agreed with it when I first heard him say it, but this week, with "Bright Star", I truly experienced it. When I first read the poem, I wasn't in a good mood. I was irritated and as a result of this, I found the poem sappy and ridiculous. However, when we looked at the poem a second time in class, I was not in a bad mood and I was able to look more deeply into the meaning of the poem. Without the dark cloud of a bad mood blocking its way, the sun which is reason and understanding was able to shine brightly and apologetically onto me, helping me to make connections of my own to the poem. The poem isn't sappy and hopelessly romantic, my mood was just very anti- sap and anti- romance that first day.
I will definitely look at things more than once now; I don't know that I'll turn in a first draft again! Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, because sometimes the first draft is the best draft. I will be open to reconsider things like poems and books and artwork more now though, because I feel that I truly understand that it takes multiple viewings or readings to grasp a concept. As if realizing this fact the first time wasn't enough, I just realized that I started to reread this post, to make sure that I understood what I was saying, even though I am the one who just wrote it. I guess I now know that I really comprehended this lesson, huh?
